Before You Call
Five Things To Check In Five Minutes.
A lot of no-heat calls turn out to be something you can fix yourself. Run through these first. If the furnace still will not fire, you have ruled out the easy stuff and our tech can go straight to the real problem.
✓
Thermostat
Set it to Heat, raise it 3–5 degrees above room temperature, and replace the batteries if the screen is blank or dim.
✓
Furnace Switch & Breaker
There is a light-style switch on or near the furnace. Make sure it is on, then check the breaker panel for a tripped furnace breaker.
✓
Filter
A filter packed with dust can shut a furnace down on a safety limit. If it is gray and clogged, swap it and try again.
✓
Furnace Door
Most furnaces will not run if the lower access panel is loose. Make sure it is seated and latched.
✓
Intake & Exhaust Pipes
High-efficiency furnaces vent through white PVC pipes on the side of the house. Snow, ice or a bird nest over those openings will stop the furnace cold.

What Usually Breaks
The Repairs Behind Most No-Heat Calls.
On a Front Range furnace, a handful of parts cause most of the outages we see. Here is what they are and roughly what they cost to fix. Prices come from our published HVAC cost guide.
Hot Surface Igniter
The part that lights the burners. They crack with age and are one of the most common no-heat repairs. Low end of the $150–$1,200 repair range.
Flame Sensor
A dirty sensor makes the furnace light, then shut off seconds later. Usually a cleaning or a cheap replacement.
Inducer Motor & Pressure Switch
If the draft motor or its switch fails, the furnace will not light for safety reasons. A mid-range repair.
Control Board & Gas Valve
Board failures show up as blinking codes and dead furnaces. These sit at the higher end of the repair range.
Do not try to fix anything. Get everyone outside, do not flip light switches, and call Xcel Energy’s gas emergency line at 1-800-895-2999 or 911 from outside the house. Once the gas side is cleared, call us and we will repair or replace the furnace.
Keep It From Happening
Most No-Heat Nights Start With A Skipped Tune-Up.
A fall furnace tune-up catches weak igniters, dirty flame sensors and failing motors before the first cold snap. Service plan members also get priority scheduling and 15% off repairs. Replacing an older system instead? Get a ballpark in about a minute with our HVAC cost estimator, or read more about furnace repair.
Check that the thermostat is set to Heat and is set a few degrees above room temperature, that its batteries are good, that the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch near the unit) is on, that the breaker has not tripped, and that the filter is not clogged. If all of that looks right and there is still no heat, call us.
What if I smell gas?
Do not troubleshoot. Leave the house, do not flip switches, and call Xcel Energy’s gas emergency line at 1-800-895-2999 from outside. Once the gas side is cleared, we can repair the furnace.
What are your hours for no-heat calls?
We answer and dispatch every day from 8am to 10pm, including weekends. Call (303) 627-3395 and we will tell you honestly how soon a tech can get there.
How much does a furnace repair cost?
Most furnace repairs in the Denver metro land between $150 and $1,200, depending on the part. Igniters and flame sensors sit at the low end; inducer motors, control boards and gas valves at the high end. You get the price before we do the work. See our HVAC cost guide for the full breakdown.
Should I repair or replace a furnace that quit?
If the furnace is under about 15 years old and the repair is a normal part, repair it. If it is older, has a cracked heat exchanger, or the repair is more than about a third of a new system, we will show you the replacement numbers side by side, including any rebates you qualify for.
